Hostelling International (HI), established in 1932 as a global not-for-profit youth hostel organization, is among the largest youth membership networks worldwide. In the late 1960s, Red Carpet Inns International, Inc., a Colorado-based corporation, acquired the trademarks for Master Hosts Inns and Red Carpet Inn from Red Carpet Inns, Inc. By 1969, industry pioneers Tommy Tucker, one of the original founders of Quality Inns, and Bill Harwood launched Red Carpet Inns of America, Inc., which established its headquarters in Daytona Beach, Florida, by May 1972.
In 1973, Red Carpet Inns of America introduced a Travel Directory, listing Master Hosts Inns and Red Carpet Inns, and offered an advanced toll-free reservation system known as the “American Express Space Bank.” This system was recognized as one of the fastest and most reliable at the time, with 57 properties featured in prime locations such as Tucson, Denver, Atlanta, Orlando, and Virginia Beach, appealing to travelers visiting key cities and attractions.
Ownership transitioned in 1978, relocating the corporate headquarters to Atlanta, Georgia. By 1980, the company expanded its reach, publishing the International Travel Directory with 99 properties across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.
